I also think of...The GET is a great place to start. I also think of Death Valley, even the Sierra High Route during favorable weather. Another option is the high country of CO, like the San Juans. Really any place you can have good visual on the land in regards to landmarks. Once you can be sufficiently good at that, then the bushwhacking part becomes a bit more tolerable...well, a little bit.
